Cereal Killer: User Experience vs. User Interface (UX v UI)

Nicholas McMillan (@ntmcmillan) teaches design at the Art Institute of Houston; and he asked me to help with a #twitterpaper project for his class. So far, the questions that we’ve received from his students (especially @hey_erma and @carlos_kikin) have focused on User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI): What are they? What’s the difference?

I headed over to Quora to see what other design professionals thought, and I think Dan Saffer hit it on the nose:

Simply put: UX is the overall experience one has with a product or service, which can include a UI. A UI is typically a combination of visual design (the look and feel) and the interaction design (how it works). UX, however, can encompass a wide range of disciplines, from industrial design to architecture to content.
